It’s back to the drawing board for the Kenora Broncos and Dryden Eagles.
Figuring out how to beat the reigning NorWOSSA soccer champions is going to be even tougher than they planned on.
The Muskie girls’ and boys’ teams opened the regular season in fine style here yesterday, with both earning a pair of shutout victories over their league rivals.
In girls’ action, Fort High (2-0) started the day with a 1-0 win over the Eagles (1-1).
Jessica Baxter got credit for the only goal of the contest 15 minutes in when Maggie Jean’s cross into the Dryden 18-yard box hit Baxter, then an Eagles’ defender, before bouncing into the net.
The Muskies made it a sweep with a 4-0 win over Kenora (0-2) in their afternoon tilt.
Claire Hyatt and Myla Angus scored in the first half, with Ashley Croswell and Baxter netting second-half goals.
Bryanna Dustin recorded the shutout in both games in her NorWOSSA regular-season debut, with veteran Liz Allan unavailable due to being part of this week’s performances of the musical “Grease” at Fort High.
In boys’ action yesterday, Connor Bujold and Max Williams scored to lead Fort High (2-0) to a 2-0 triumph over Dryden (0-2).
Gavin Richardson earned the shutout.
The Muskies then upped their offensive intensity in their second game—cruising to a 4-0 victory over Kenora (1-1).
Joey Angus notched a pair of goals in the first half while Cam Lidkea and Ian Jodoin had singles.
Cole Kowalski got the shutout in what also was his first career regular-season outing in goal.
In the day’s other games, Kenora edged Dryden 3-2 in boys’ play while the Eagles blanked the Broncos 4-0 in girls’ action.
Both Muskie teams head to Thunder Bay this weekend for exhibition action.
They’ll resume NorWOSSA play next Wednesday (May 13) in Dryden against the Broncos and host Eagles.
