The Fort Frances Firemen PeeWee boys’ hockey team finished just shy of the medals at a tournament in Kenora over the weekend.
The Firemen opened with an 8-1 victory against the Sioux Spyders.
David Pryde and Connor Botsford scored two goals apiece while Cameron Penney, Ian Jodoin, Dusten Foster, and Damon Perreault added singles.
Next up was a clash with Standard Insurance (Kenora), and the Fort side again lit up the scoreboard in a 9-3 win.
Jodoin, Patrick Mills, and Pryde all netted two goals apiece, with Wade Johnson, Conor McManaman, and Foster scoring the others.
The Firemen faced a stiffer test in their next game but escaped with a 4-2 win over the Ignace Phantoms.
McManaman notched a hat trick in that one while Johnson netted the other marker.
That set up a meeting with another team from the district, the Emo Thunderbolts, in the semi-finals.
The two teams traded goals in regulation time, with Mills netting the Firemen’s lone marker while Daniel Andy replied for the ’Bolts.
Overtime decided nothing, but the Thunderbolts got the best in the shootout, scoring twice to advance to the final.
The Thunderbolts lost there, however, dropping a 5-2 decision to Bishop Plumbing (Kenora).
Fort Frances’ other team at the tournament, the Oddfellows, played three close round-robin games of their own.
They opened with a 0-0 tie against the Phantoms before beating McDonald’s (Kenora) 5-2.
They wrapped up the round-robin with a 2-1 loss to Pro Auto Glass (Kenora) to finish eighth.
