The Fort Frances PeeWee Leafs claimed the title at the Mankato Meltdown 12U tournament over the weekend with a 4-3 shootout win over Shakopee in the gold-medal game.
Piper Miller scored all three of the Leafs’ goals in regulation time while Julia Guertin and Hayden Allam both tallied in the shootout.
The Leafs had opened tourney play by doubling Bloomington 6-3 on the strength of Guertin’s hat trick.
Allam, Miller, and Kallie Boshey had the other goals.
The squad then battled Lakeview to a 3-3 tie, with Miller netting all three goals for the Leafs.
The Atom Leafs, meanwhile, finished atop the consolation round with a 6-1 win over Mankato.
Emma Wilson netted two markers while Sayler Easton, Ayanna Savage, Harper Woolsey, and Kali Tessier added singles.
The squad had lost two games prior, including a 3-2 shootout defeat to Faribault and 2-1 setback to St. Peter.
Davilyn Miller scored both of the Leafs’ goals against Faribault while Easton tallied the lone marker against St. Peter.
At the Thunder Bay Chill tournament, the Fort Frances Goonies downed the Fort Frances Bantam Devils 3-2 in a nail-biting semi-final showdown.
The Goonies then were edged 2-1 by the Thunder Bay Tigers in the final to settle for silver.
The squad had opened play with a 6-0 shut out of Nipigon, then lost 4-0 to the Devils.
After earning a 3-3 tie with the Tigers, the Goonies blanked the Thunder Bay Petries 1-0 to earn a semi-final berth.
As for the Devils, they previously dropped a 4-3 decision to the Tigers before whitewashing the Goonies 4-0.
Then after being doubled 6-3 by the Petries, they blanked Nipigon 5-0 to earn a semi-final berth.
The Fort Frances Midget Snipers, meanwhile, fell 3-2 to the Thunder Bay Sabres before being blanked 3-0 by the Kenora Boiiis.
Then after battling to a 3-3 tie with the Tigers, they were downed 3-1 by the Thunder Bay Bears.
