PeeWee ‘AAA’ playoffs go this weekend

A dozen members of the Fort Frances K of C Knights PeeWee ‘AA’ squad have joined three players from Kenora and another two from Red Lake to compete in the regional playoffs this weekend in Schreiber.
The team, which also includes Knights coach Don McCool on its coaching staff, will battle the Thunder Bay Kings and host North Stars to determine the Northwestern Ontario rep at the Ontario PeeWee championships in Sudbury.
They will have their work cut out for them. The Schreiber North Stars—featuring the best players from various North Shore communities—was selected back in September while the Thunder Bay Kings play together all season long.
Meanwhile, the local squad, which is coming together here to practice this week, has not yet had a full practice other than the tryout session held in early January.
Still, they enter the playdowns cautiously optimistic. The team split a pair of exhibition games with Schreiber last month while the Knights tied the Kings 5-5 in their only meeting at a tournament in Brandon.
The regional squad will open action Saturday at noon against the Kings, then face Schreiber at 7 p.m. The top two teams after the round robin will meet in the final Sunday, with the winner advancing to Sudbury.
Knights players who earned spots on the regional team include goalies Brady Caul and T.J. Pocock, defencemen Patrick Bobczynski, Cody McCool, and Josh Scott, and forwards Joe Basaraba, Mitch Cain, Nathan Calder, Matt DePiero, Luke Judson, Evan McCabe, and Zach McCool.
Mike Jourdain, from the local Kentucky Colonels PeeWee ‘A’ team, was chosen as an alternate, but it was unclear at press time if he would make the trip to Schreiber.
