It was nearly a perfect weekend of curling for the local Ashley Payne rink at the U18 regionals held in Sioux Lookout over the weekend.
Team Payne, which is also comprised of Lauren Penney (lead), Daffni Chabot (second), Jillian Cousineau (third), and Anna Peters, compiled a 4-1 record en route to a second-place finish and thus qualifying for the provincials next month.
The rink opened play on Friday afternoon with a narrow 6-5 win over Hailey Goriak (Sioux Lookout).
Trailing 5-4 heading into the final end, Team Payne scored a pair to pull out the win.
The squad then followed that up with a 12-2 rout of fellow local Danielle Schram that night.
It was a different story on Saturday morning for Team Payne, however, as they suffered their only loss of the weekend with a 6-1 setback to Britney Malette (Port Arthur).
But the squad was able to rebound in the afternoon draw with a big 9-6 win over Goriak before ending play that evening with a 10-1 thumping of Schram.
As for Team Schram, which is also comprised of Shae Sinclair (lead), Emma Tucker (second), Grace George (third) and Aili Chabot, they compiled an 0-5 record to finish fourth out of the four teams on the women’s side of the bracket.
The squad opened play on Friday afternoon with a 15-1 drubbing at the hands of Malette before then falling to Payne that evening.
Team Schram then dropped a 12-3 decision to Goriak on Saturday morning before then falling 10-1 to Malette and ending play with another loss to Payne to come away from the event winless and thus failing to advance.
In men’s action, meanwhile, only two teams competed over the weekend. One rink was Team Owen Riches of here and the Dallass Burgess rink that is based out of Kakabeka Falls.
Team Riches lost all three of their games to Burgess to fail to advance to the provincial round.
The squad, which also is comprised of Kian McEvoy (lead), Brett Schram (second) and Jordan Ekstrom (third), opened with a 6-4 loss on Friday night before then dropping a 7-1 decision on Saturday morning.
They then ended play that evening with a 6-4 setback to finish 0-3.
Both the Schram and Riches rinks will have one more chance to qualify for the provincials, at the U18 West Qualifier on Feb. 21-23 in Thunder Bay.
The provincials are slated for March 4-8 in Sault Ste. Marie.
