Two local volleyball coaches will be in on the ground floor of a new provincial program designed to further the development of grassroots players.
Amy Wilson-Hands and Terry McMahon will oversee the tryout process for the Region 1 team that will be selected to take part in two province-wide camps at the Ontario Volleyball Association’s high-performance centre in North Bay this summer.
A total of 12 girls and nine boys in the 14U category will move on from the regional tryouts (dates still to be determined) to the provincial camps, with McMahon possibly also helping out in North Bay.
“The players will have a chance to develop their skills and athleticism in a structured OVA program that is integrated in the athlete ‘High Performance Pathway,'” Wilson-Hands explained.
“The program will include both beach and indoor volleyball concepts and training,” she noted.
Wilson-Hands won’t be able to travel to North Bay for either the boys’ or girls’ camps.
While the girls’ camp is taking place, Wilson-Hands will be with another Team Ontario volleyball contingent as their coach at the 2017 North American Indigenous Games from July 16-23 in Toronto.
During the boys’ camp, she will be in training sessions as coach of the Team Ontario girls’ volleyball squad that will take part in the 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg from July 28-Aug. 13.
