Two Minnesota residents have been fined a total of $1,300 after trying to smuggle live bait into Ontario through the Canada Customs entry station on Sand Point Lake in Rainy River District.
Arthur Eggen, of Crane Lake, and Thomas Bergman, of North Oaks, were fined $900 and $400, respectively, for bringing live minnows into Ontario for use as bait.
On May 17, 2009, Eggen, a fishing guide, was found to have roughly two dozen live minnows and Bergman about one dozen.
The live bait was seized and later turned over to a Ministry of Natural Resources’ conservation officer.
Justice of the Peace Pat Clysdale-Cornell heard the cases Jan. 29 in Fort Frances.
The ministry reminds anglers that it is illegal to transfer live fish or live spawn from one body of water to another without the authorization of the ministry.
In addition, non-residents cannot trap minnows for bait.
