Two U.S. residents have been fined a total of $1,000 for shooting a deer on posted private land.
Peter Flood, of Barre, Vt., and Ronald Comette, of Brookfield, Vt., were fined $800 and $200, respectively, for trespassing to hunt.
Court heard that on Nov. 4, 2009, conservation officers investigated a deer that had been shot on private property and dragged onto Crown land, off Highway 596 near Kenora.
The following year, in the fall of 2010, conservation officers came in contact with two hunters in the same general area.
While questioning the men, the officers learned that Flood had shot a deer on the nearby private property the previous year and Comette had helped move the deer off the private property onto Crown land.
The property was clearly marked with “No Trespassing” signs.
Justice of the Robert McNally heard the case April 12 in Kenora.
