Owls’ spike squads aim to keep rolling

Last week was a dominant one for the Rainy River Owls’ junior girls’ volleyball team.
The squad earned a pair of 3-0 sweeps against the visiting Red Lake Rams and Sioux Lookout Warriors last Tuesday and Wednesday to improve its NorWOSSA ‘A’ record to 3-1.
“I wasn’t at the Rams’ game due to other commitments but the first game against the Warriors was stellar,” lauded Owls’ head coach Corey Smith.
“The focus [is key],” he stressed. “Our girls can play the game, they just need to focus and make the right decisions.”
Looking back on his squad’s first half, Smith assessed it as being “good.”
“It’s too bad we played Atikokan, who looks like the best team, first,” he remarked.
“The girls are playing much better now and I can’t wait to hopefully get a rematch in [the] playoffs,” Smith added.
The Owls don’t resume NorWOSSA action until Jan. 9-10, when they host the Pelican Falls Wolverines and the St. Thomas Aquinas Saints (Kenora).
Smith said his team’s focus in the second half of the season will be on “winning NorWOSSA.”
The Owls’ senior squad, meanwhile, split its matches last week against the visiting Rams and Warriors.
The Owls (1-3) swept the Rams in straight sets (25-22, 25-10, and 25-15) last Tuesday but then fell in straight sets to the Warriors the following day (25-14, 25-15, and 25-15).
The seniors also don’t resume NorWOSSA action until Jan. 9-10 against the Wolverines and Saints.
