‘Other’ Lindsay takes Shoal Lake derby

Dave Lindsay is on a mission to make a name of his own.
The brother of three-time Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship winner Norm Lindsay is fishing his best at just the right time, as he and fellow Sioux Narrows resident Colin Gluting teamed up to win the $10,000 first prize in the 74-team Shoal Lake Bass Classic near Kenora on July 5-6.
Dave Lindsay, who fished alongside his sibling for two of Norm’s three victories in the FFCBC, and Gluting snagged the second biggest fish on the opening day (4.18 pounds).
That prize catch land themselves in second place overall with a combined catch of 18.29 pounds, just behind Jerry Millar and Scott Cook of Winnipeg (18.42), who had the biggest fish on Day One (4.29).
Lindsay and Gluting then came through with a 15.42-pound total on Day Two for a final weight of 33.71, edging Allan Ufland and Mark Labitka of Kenora (33.12), who took home the runners-up cheque of $5,000.
John Guzej and Ted Stewner of Winnipeg used the largest one-day catch of any team (19.35) to sneak into third place with a mark of 32.63 pounds and a prize share of $2,500, while Millar and Cook finished in fourth with a total of 32.36 to win $1,500 plus an extra $400 for reeling in the big bass on Day One.
Joe Pritchett and Hiram Archibald of Sioux Narrows (32.16) ended up in fifth to grab $1,000, while the Fort Frances duo of Doug McBride and Steve Ballan (31.95) placed sixth to bring home $800.
McBride and Ballan were tied for eighth after a Day One catch of 16.01, with a best fish of 3.26, but moved up the ladder despite a lower total on Day Two (15.94, best fish of 3.54).
Dave Struk and Rick Foster of Kenora (31.68) were seventh to win $700, while Norm Lindsay and Jess Swenson prepared for defence of their FFCBC title next week with an eighth-place result (30.39) to win $600.
Rick Savage and Fred Curwain tied fellow Kenora residents Ray Lindquist and Dan Williams for ninth (30.26) to win $450 apiece, although Lindquist and Williams raked in an extra $400 for capturing the tournament’s biggest fish with a Day Two catch of 5.08.
Fort Frances Times contributor Gord Pyzer and teammate Leo Heyens were 26th with a two-day total of 26.73, while former Borderland Thunder and current Dryden Ice Dogs defenceman Terry Parisien teamed with Feathermen Hawks forward Brent Greene to wind up 39th with a combined total of 25.37.
