It was a hole too big to climb out of.
The Fort Frances Young Wolves nearly came back from a five-run deficit, but couldn’t finish the rally and lost 5-4 to Lifetime Seamless Gutters (Wis.) in their opening game at the North American Fastpitch Association ‘A’ World Series in the Quad Cities region.
Lifetime scored three runs in the third and two more in the fourth before the Wolves rediscovered their hitting touch.
They got one back in the bottom of the fourth and added three in the sixth, but then ran out of steam to drop down to the losers’ bracket.
Chris Klema earned the win, going the distance while giving up nine hits and two walks while striking out six.
Murray Armstrong was tagged with the loss after surrendering eight hits.
He also walked a pair while fanning nine.
Fort Frances took on the Northern Michigan FP Juggernauts this morning (the outcome wasn’t known as of press time).
A win would see the Wolves play again today at 5 p.m. while a loss would mean a 3 p.m. start.
If that wasn’t enough action, a portion of the Wolves’ squad also will begin play today under the name Sight & Sound Wolves 23U in the NAFA men’s 23 & Under World Series.
That crew will take on Waseda University (Maroon) from Japan at 7 p.m., then face Bowen FP 23U (Illinois) at 9 p.m. in Pool ‘A.’
Sight & Sound then concludes pool play tomorrow at noon against the Young Bucks (Calif.)
Pool ‘B’ features Waseda University (White), Kegel 23U (Minn./S.D./N.D.), Nebraska 23U, and Mid-America Advertising (Illinois).
