The four Muskie court sports teams continued their NorWOSSA seasons in Kenora last Thursday.
Both girls’ basketball squads had earned wins over Kenora here a week earlier, but it was the junior Broncos who used home court to their advantage this time around in rallying to a 27-15 win.
The junior Muskies (2-1) held an 11-5 lead at halftime, but could muster only four points in the second half as the Broncos gained momentum and never let up—netting 22 points to close out the one-sided win.
“The Muskie offence had numerous shooting opportunities but struggled with capitalizing on them,” co-coach Sarah Noonan wrote in an e-mail to the Times.
Sara Roach had nine points in a losing cause while Grade 9 student Mary Strain led the defence with four steals.
The senior girls, meanwhile, improved to 2-1 in NorWOSSA play with a commanding 33-15 win over the host Broncos last Thursday.
“We shot about 85 percent at the foul line,” co-coach Marla Knutsen enthused. “Our hard work on foul shooting in practice is starting to pay off.
“The girls played great defence and held them [Kenora] to five points in the first half of the game,” she added.
Lauren Gurski scored 15 points while Taylor Meyers added 12.
Knutsen also noted Kayla Windigo played scrappy defence and showed strong rebounding skills all game.
In boys’ volleyball last Thursday in Kenora, the Muskie juniors (0-3) battled hard but came up short in a five-set loss to the Broncos.
After being swept by Kenora here back on Sept. 25, the juniors came out strong in the first set this time, winning 25-21.
They dropped the next two sets by scores of 25-16 and 25-17, but stormed back with a 25-23 win in the fourth set to force the fifth-and-deciding one.
Unfortunately, the Broncos took the set with a 15-10 win, with Muskie head coach Duane Roen saying mental errors cost his team the match.
It was all Kenora in the senior boys’ match as the host Broncos swept the black-and-gold by scores of 25-22, 25-19, and 25-10.
All four teams were back in action here yesterday against Dryden (results weren’t available by press time last night).
