O.L.W. spikers take silver at tourney

The annual Gord Savoy volleyball tournament—for boys’ and girls’ teams in Grades 7 and 8—was held Nov. 1 in Atikokan.
Teams came from Dryden, Rainy River, Stratton, Fort Frances, Devlin, Mine Centre, Whitefish Bay, and host Atikokan.
The Grade 8 girls’ team from Our Lady of the Way School (Stratton) made it all the way to the final before being beaten by a Dryden squad consisting of players from several schools.
Members of the silver medal-winning team included Jessica Engels, Christa Big George, Alyshia Langlais, Kaylie Lundgren, Gabby O’Connor, Kelsey Jolicouer, and Skye Blackburde.
They were coached by Patrick Tougas.
In other news, O.L.W. is planning a fun afternoon on Wednesday, Nov. 26. Come and bring your favourite book and read to the students. There also will be hot chocolate, prizes, and something for everyone.
Meanwhile, the school library is sporting a new reading table. O.L.W. would like to thank Manitou Lumber for donating some of the lumber, Lowes Lumber for donation of paint, and Larry Budreau for lending his wood lathe. The table was designed, built, and painted by staff, Laura Haner and Diana Gamsby. The benches resemble and are cut like books.
On Oct. 10, the Grade 5/6 class at O.L.W. participated in the watershed clean-up program. Students travelled to Morley Park and cleaned up garbage along the river bank.
Lunch was provided for the students by the watershed program co-ordinators.
Finally, the winners of the walk-a-thon draw were Cody and Theo Heyens. The prize was a cheque for $50, which the boys donated back to the school.
O.L.W. thanks the boys for their generosity. Great going!
