Skates and Blades (Fort Frances) dominated a novice boys’ hockey tournament in Ignace last weekend, skating away with a 4-0-1 record.
After opening with a 1-1 tie against the North End Flames on a goal by Cody McCool (assisted by Wade Perusse), Skates and Blades downed the Dryden Canadians 3-1.
Zach McCool led the way with two goals while Cody McCool netted the other one. Ryan Lobreau got Dryden’s lone marker.
It was all Fort Frances in their third game, trouncing the Dryden Blues 9-1.
Blake Wepruk opened up the scoring early in the first period, followed by goals by Cody McCool and Jeff Cridland. Zach McCool then netted two goals to give Skates and Blades a 5-1 lead after the first period.
Tanner McDonald had tallied for Dryden.
Zach McCool and Cridland added second-period goals to make it 7-1. Then in the third, Cridland capped his hat trick while Wepruk netted his second of the game to round out the scoring.
Skates and Blades then made it three-straight wins after edging the Dryden Bruins 4-3 on Cody McCool’s game-winner in the third frame.
Cole Calder, Zach McCool, and Wepruk also scored for Fort Frances
In their final game of the tournament, Cody McCool netted the first goal, then his brother, Zach, tallied the next four, as Skates and Blades blanked the North End Flames 5-0.
