Northern Storm win medals


It was a successful weekend for the Northern Storm 06 and 14U girls’ hockey teams.
The Northern Storm 06 squad claimed the gold in the USA International Cup ‘AAA’ hockey tournament while the 14U one nabbed silver.
Locals Keira Fairnington and Eva Gerstner helped the Northern Storm 06 go a perfect 5-0 en route to the title.
During round-robin play, the Storm blanked the Rapid Fire 6-0 and followed that up by edging the Midwest Selects 4-3.
Then after grabbing a 2-0 shutout win over Monach, the squad routed the Minnesota Nordiques 6-0 to finish preliminary play undefeated.
The Storm then squared off against the Minnesota Machine in the final, claiming gold with a 2-0 victory.
The 14U squad, which featured locals Issy Taylor and Kathryn Fischer, also went undefeated during round-robin play.
The squad opened with a 3-2 win over the Ice Badgers before cruising to a 6-1 romp against Synergy.
After downing the Ice Cougars 5-0, the Storm doubled the Rapid Fire 4-2.
They also faced the Minnesota Machine in the championship game, losing 4-1 to earn silver.

It’s been a back-and-forth season so far in the two-team women’s division of the Borderland Soccer League.
Al’s Racquet Stringing and La Place Rendez-Vous continued that trend by battling to a 4-4 tie Thursday night.
Sara Coish, Mika Kooistra, Haily McEvoy, and Sara Kellar all scored for Al’s (3-5-2).
Laureen Peters bulged the twine twice for the Vous (5-3-2) while Alyssa Faragher and Maggie Jean also tallied.
On the men’s side, the two-game, total-goals semi-final playoff series between second-place Manitou Forest Products (4-5-3) and last-place Centra Pipelines (3-7-2) is set to begin tonight at 6:30 p.m. (weather permitting).
Game 2 is set for tomorrow at the same time.
The winner will advance to face first-place CJ Contracting (7-2-3) in a two-game, total-goals championship final next Monday and Tuesday (Aug. 13-14).
Those games also will be 6:30 p.m. starts.
