Tim Nordin lost his final two games at the men’s provincial playdowns in Sudbury to finish in last place with a 2-9 record.
Nordin and his Stratton rink of third Mitch Seguin, second Mike Badiuk, and lead Travis Showalter lost 8-5 to Sudbury’s Matt Dumontelle in Friday afternoon’s draw, then 8-2 to Bryan Burgess (Port Arthur) in Saturday morning’s final round-robin draw.
Brad Jacobs (Soo Curlers Association) downed Dumontelle 5-2 in Sunday’s final to earn the Northern Ontario berth at the Tim Hortons Brier coming up March 6-14 in Halifax.
After being mathematically eliminated from playoff contention thanks to a pair of costly losses on Thursday, Nordin opened with a single Friday afternoon but Dumontelle countered with a deuce in the second.
Nordin then went on a string of singles, picking up one each in the third, fourth, and fifth ends to surge ahead 4-2.
But Dumontelle grabbed the lead back, sticking up three in the sixth to grab a 5-4 lead.
Nordin tied it by scoring one in the seventh, but Dumontelle completed a raised take-out for three more in the ninth to seal the 8-5 win.
Then against Burgess on Saturday, Nordin gave up a pair each in the first and second ends to fall behind 4-0 early.
Nordin bounced back with two of his own in the third, but Burgess picked up a single in the fourth before stealing two in the fifth and one more in the sixth before the rinks shook hands.
Editor’s note: A story in Friday’s Daily Bulletin incorrectly stated Nordin had beaten Brad Jacobs 5-4 in the draw that morning.
In fact, it was Jacobs who won.
The Times regrets any confusion this error may have caused.
