Nip-Rock wins Emo tourney

The Emo Devlin Barwick Minor Hockey Association’s annual PeeWee tournament, co-ordinated by co-chairs Cindy Judson and Ellen Brigham, attracted 14 teams.
In the ‘A’ event, the Nip-Rock Elks (Nipigon) faced the Kenora Sharks, both teams having emerged without a loss from round-robin play.
After jumping out to a 2-1 lead in the first period, the Elks exploded for four goals in the second period en route to a 7-1 victory and the tourney crown.
Chet Blanchette and Chad St. Pierre led Nip-Rock with two goals while Kyle Ray, Luke Hedican, and Justin Olsen added singles. Shane St. Dennis netted the Sharks lone goal.
The Emo Predators, who came out of the round-robin with a 3-1 record, locked horns with Kenora Blue Esso in the ‘B’ final but came out on the short end of a 3-0 score.
Kenora opened a 1-0 lead on Jayme Cameron’s marker at the eight minute mark of the first period, then added two more in the second from Cameron and Tyler White.
The third period went scoreless.
And in the ‘C’ event, the Vermilion Cougars hunted down the Lake of the Woods Wildcats 3-0, with Ryan Sawchuk scoring all three goals unassisted in the second period.
There was only one blowout in the tournament, with all the other games featuring reasonably close and tight matches.
