Rainy River District will not be representing Northern Ontario for a second-straight year at the Dominion Club Championships.
Maury Nielson’s rink from Stratton failed to nab the provincial crown over the weekend in Sault Ste. Marie.
Looking to follow in the footsteps of Raymond Roy’s Fort Frances foursome that represented Northern Ontario at last year’s event, Nielson instead went 1-4 record to finish in a tie for fifth with Jonah Dupuis (Nipigon).
The lone triumph for Nielson and his team, including Neil Haw, second Andrew McCormack, and lead Tyler Nielson, came Saturday morning when they upended Tom Leonard (Sudbury) 6-4 after picking up steals in the sixth and seventh ends.
The men’s crown ended up going to Dale Dubinsky (Kakabeka Falls), who finished up the round-robin with a perfect 5-0 record before defeating Kevin Rutledge (Soo Curlers) in a convincing 7-2 triumph in the final.
Dubinsky will be joining women’s provincial champ Melanie Patry (Coniston) at the 2011 Dominion Club Championships, which will be held Nov. 21-26 in Richmond, B.C.
