The latest member of the SIJHL finally has its name set in stone, with the new franchise based out of Ear Falls to be dubbed the English River Miners.
The franchise’s newly-formed executive opted to go with English River over Ear Falls, stating that “it will be the best name in aiding with the building of the organization throughout the entire Ear Falls and Red Lake area.”
The Miners, who will be making their debut this fall, will be coached and managed by Kevin Kahoot, who briefly served as the Thunder Bay North Stars’ head coach a year ago.
In other league news, the North Stars currently are searching for a new head coach after Jordan Smith left the team to lead the NOJHL’s Soo Thunderbirds.
Smith, who originally is from Sault Ste. Marie, took over from Todd Howarth behind the bench in Thunder Bay last season.
He helped the team to a fourth-place finish before they lost in the opening round of the playoffs to the Minnesota Iron Rangers.
