The last two weekends saw two quite different events take place in Nestor Falls, as the town hosted a softball tournament during the Civic Holiday long weekend, and a ‘Triple P’ race occurring on the previous weekend.
“Both events went quite well,” Holly Kropelin, chair of the Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls Healthy Living Collation and league manager for the Nestor Falls softball league, explained.
“It was really hot for the ball tournament but we had a full lineup of eight teams and everyone seemed to enjoy it, and in fact we already had someone pay me already for next year’s tournament.
“The ‘Triple P’ race went well also, even though the weather that day was a little bit rainy and one of our teams had to drop out leaving us with only three teams, but it was still good,” Kropelin added.
This year was the second year for the ‘Triple P’ race, which stands for paddle, pedal and pound, however team numbers were down from seven in the inaugural year to only three this time around.
“We might end up switching the date around for that since our turnout wasn’t as great this year,” Kropelin said.
“There were a lot of different things going on that weekend that we chose to have it, so we’re thinking about moving it to September and having it combined with something like the Terry Fox Run,” Kropelin added.
As for the softball tournament, which was also in its second year, a full field of eight teams might mean for expansion somewhere down the road, and a slight change to where the games are played.
“It would be awesome to expand the tournament, but it’s a little difficult when you only have the one field there in Nestor Falls to play on,” Kropelin noted.
“We might be able to partner with the Onigaming First Nation as they have a couple of fields up there, but we are not sure on that at this point,” Kropelin added.
This year’s softball tournament was won by The Slugs from Emo, while the ‘Triple P’ race crown was captured by the four person team of Alexis Hampe and Nick Cuadros (Nestor Falls) along with their teammates Alex Hedman and Zack Jolicoeur from Fort Frances.
