Lisa Penner and her Northern Ontario teammates are doing their best curling at the right time.
The Fort Frances resident is playing third for the Peggy Taylor rink of Kenora, who defeated Manitoba’s Kim Link 6-3 yesterday in their first game in the championship pool at the senior women’s curling championship in Edmonton.
That puts their record in the championship pool at 2-2—leaving them in a three-way tie for the fourth and final playoff spot with Manitoba and B.C.’s Sandra Jenkins.
Teams carry over wins and losses collected during the preliminary round against the other teams that made the championship pool.
After a 7-5 loss to Debbie Moss (Northwest Territories) on Monday put them in must-win territory, Northern Ontario bulled its way into the championship pool with a pair of victories Tuesday to finish the preliminary round at 3-3.
That left them tied for third in Pool ‘A’ with Elaine Roy (Quebec), with the top four in each pool advancing.
Taylor beat Roy 8-3 in her first game Tuesday, then edged Shelly Graham (New Brunswick) 6-5.
The Taylor crew faced a formidable task earlier today against undefeated Terri Loblaw (Alberta) in their only game of the day.
The outcome was unavailable as of press time.
Northern Ontario then faces Laura Phillips (Newfoundland and Labrador) tomorrow morning before taking on B.C. that night.
The semi-finals go Saturday morning, with the gold- and bronze-medal games set for that afternoon.
