The prospect of winning the 2015 national senior women’s curling championship just got significantly more real for Northern Ontario.
Peggy Taylor from Kenora, with Fort Frances resident Lisa Penner handling duties at third, upset previously-undefeated Terri Loblaw (Alberta) 6-5 yesterday morning in the second draw of the championship pool.
Taylor’s crew, which won its fourth-straight game at the event in Edmonton, stormed back from an early 4-0 deficit and iced the victory with steals of one over the final three ends.
The win left Northern Ontario at 3-2—and in a three-way tie for third with Colleen Jones (Nova Scotia) and Sandra Jenkins (B.C.)—heading into play today.
Only the top four teams in the championship pool will advance to the semi-finals, with Taylor assured a spot if she wins both of her games today.
She opened play this morning against winless Laura Phillips (Newfoundland and Labrador), with the outcome incomplete as of press time.
Then Taylor will clash with Jenkins tonight in what likely will be an elimination game for both rinks.
The semi-finals go tomorrow morning, followed by the gold- and bronze-medal games in the afternoon.
