Mustangs win tourney title in Duluth

The local Sunset Country “AA” Ford Atom Mustangs dumped St. Paul, M. 8-1 on Sunday to capture the championship of a four-team tournament in Duluth.
Cody Dittaro scored twice to give the Mustangs a 2-1 lead after two periods. Then the floodgates opened in the third as David Pierce scored three times, Josh Johnston added a pair, and Lucas Romaniuk tallied once en route to the lopsided win.
The Mustangs’ defence was solid all weekend, giving up just six goals in four games behind the solid goaltending of Stephen Robertson and Wade Friesen.
At the other end of the ice, they outscored their opponents by a 16-5 margin to finish first in the round-robin.
The Mustangs opened the tournament Friday with a 3-0 win against Wausau, Wis. Jared Catholique-Bruyere, Johnston, and Justin Larson all scored while Scott Howarth added a pair of assists.
Then Saturday morning, Larson had a five-goal performance to pace the Mustangs to an 8-2 pasting of St. Paul. Howarth, Andrew Perrault, and Catholique-Bruyere added singles while Brian White and Romaniuk each had three assists.
Later that day, the Mustangs had a little more trouble with the Duluth Portman Bruins, outshooting the host team by a wide 26-10 margin but only winning 5-3.
Pierce had another hat trick in that one while Scott McFayden and Larson also scored to send the Mustangs into the tournament final against St. Paul.
