Mustangs win consolation final in Roseau

The local Sunset Country Ford “AA” Atom Mustangs won the consolation final at a tournament in Roseau on Sunday, defeating a team from Alexandria, Mn. 4-1.
Jared Catholique-Bruyere tallied 9:55 into the game to stake the Mustangs to a 1-0 lead. Then they widened their lead to 3-0 after two on goals by Brian White and Tyler Miller.
Alexandria sliced the Fort’s lead to 3-1 but the Mustangs put the game away with 17 seconds to play when Scott McFayden scored on a goal-mouth scramble.
The Mustangs reached the consolation final with a 5-0 shutout over Baudette on Saturday. Michael Spencer, Joshua Johnston, and Shaun Egan scored in the first to make it 3-0.
Egan scored his second of the game at 12:54 of the middle frame, then completed his hat trick midway through the third.
Lucas Romaniuk also helped the cause with a pair of assists.
The Mustangs opened action Friday night with a 5-3 loss to host Roseau, who jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Justin Larson scored to close the gap.
Roseau then went up 4-1 before David Pierce and Larson scored to pull the Mustangs to within 4-3 before the hosts put the game out of reach with a goal with just over three minutes to go.
Thief River Falls won the tournament with a victory over Warroad while Roseau went on to win the third-place game 6-5 against Crookston.
Fergus Falls dumped Baudette 4-1 in the seventh-place game.
