The local Sunset Country Ford Mustangs ‘AA’ Atom hockey team captured an eight-squad tournament in Baudette on Sunday, edging Roseau 2-1 in the final.
Tied at 1-1 with just over one minute to go, Tyler Miller, assisted by Brian White, notched the game-winner.
It was Roseau’s first loss of the season.
The teams were deadlocked 0-0 with about five minutes left in the third before Miller netted his first of the game (again assisted by White) to give the Mustangs the lead.
But it was short-lived as Roseau tied the game about two minutes later, setting the stage for Miller’s heroics in the final minute.
Miller was named game MVP for the Mustangs, who earned a berth in the final after finishing in first place in the Stars division with a 3-0 record.
They opened action Friday with a 6-2 win over Sioux Lookout.
Miller, named Sunset’s game MVP, scored twice and added an assist in that one while Steven Boileau, George Ossachuk, Mitchell Green, and Brandon Roden added singles.
White chipped in with three assists.
In their next game, the Mustangs dumped host Baudette 7-1 on Saturday, paced by two-goal efforts from Miller and Ossachuk. Scott Sampson, Green, and White netted singles.
Paul Dobransky was named Sunset’s game MVP.
In their next game Saturday, the Mustangs downed International Falls 6-2. Green and Miller each scored twice while Roden and Josh Sigurdson, named Sunset’s game MVP, also scored.
The Mustangs’ next tournament action is here Feb. 11-13.
