The local Sunset Country Ford Mustangs struck gold last weekend at a ‘AA’ Squirt (Atom) tournament in Baudette, Mn.
The Mustangs, who entered the championship game Sunday against Roseau with a 3-0 record, had to overcome an early deficit en route to a 7-2 victory.
Roseau held a 2-0 lead after the first period but the Mustangs stormed back in the second on goals by Dan Chapman, Steve Boileau (Ben Drazenovich), and Drazenovich (Brent Lindberg).
The Mustangs then iced the game–and the tourney title–with four unanswered goals in the final period.
Andrew Easton and Lindberg each netted unassisted tallies to make the score 5-2. Chapman (George Ossachuk) and Ossachuk (Scott Sampson/Kevin Bobczynski) then rounded out the scoring.
The Atoms had opened the tourney with a big comeback victory over Kenora.
Kyle Herr (Chapman) had given the Fort Frances team the early 1-0 lead but Kenora followed with four unanswered goals to make it 4-1.
But the Mustangs came to life with a pair of goals late in the second period. Bobczynski (Lindberg) got the first one, with their other goal scorer not available.
Easton (Sampson) netted the equalizer in the third before Chapman (unassisted) scored the game-winner with just 45 seconds left for the 5-4 victory.
“The Kenora team was mad,” co-coach Joe Bobczynski chuckled Tuesday morning about the Mustangs’ comeback.
The Mustangs next squared off against International Falls on Saturday and skated away with a 5-3 win.
Brian Glavish and Easton (Drazenovich) put the Fort squad up 2-0 but the Falls came back with a pair of goals to tie the game.
The Falls then scored the first goal of the third period to grab a 3-2 lead. Then it was the Mustangs’ turn to storm back, scoring three unanswered goals by Drazenovich (Chapman/Herr), Chapman, and Easton to earn the victory.
The Mustangs then advanced to the championship game with an 8-0 romp over Emo.
Herr and Easton led the attack with three goals each while Chapman and Justin Scott were the other goal scorers. Sampson (two), Tyler Harris (two), Glavish, Chapman, Boileau, Lindberg, and Bobczynski all earned assisted.
The Mustangs will host a tournament here Feb. 9-11 (including teams from Dryden, Kenora, and Thunder Bay), then they’ll travel to Fargo, N.D. for one Feb. 22-25.
