Mustangs ousted in semi-finals

The local Sunset Ford Mustangs “AA” Atom hockey team was unable to hold on to a three-goal, second-period lead and wound up on the short end of a 6-4 score to the Brandon Wheat Kings at a tournament in Portage La Prairie, Man. last weekend.
The loss eliminated them from the 24-team tourney.
The Mustangs were on fire early, building up a 3-0 lead by the 4:57 mark of the first period. Justin Larson opened the scoring with 9:07 left in the first, assisted by Brian White, before Scott McFayden tallied to make it 2-0 just 33 seconds later.
Cody Dittaro then added a short-handed marker for a 3-0 lead.
But Brandon came back in the second, scoring three-straight goals, including two on the power play, to tie the game at 3-3 heading into the third.
Brandon took their first lead of the game with exactly six minutes to go but Larson, assisted by White, netted his second of the game to make it 4-4
But the Wheat Kings iced the win with a pair of last goals just over a minute apart.
The Mustangs sported a 2-1 record to finish second in Pool ‘A,’ opening action Friday morning with a 2-0 shutout over the Russell Wolf Pack.
Brian White, assisted by David Pierce, scored with 1:30 left in the first and then Pierce, assisted by Joshua Johnston, added an insurance marker with 2:29 to play in the game.
Then after dropping a 6-0 decision to the host Portage La Prairie Terriers, the Mustangs wrapped up pool play with a 3-0 shutout over The Pas Huskies.
The special teams were the key for the Fort in that game as they scored twice on the power play and also added a short-handed marker.
Larson (assisted by Andrew Perrault and Pierce) and Johnston (from Pierce) scored with the man advantage while Jared Catholique-Bruyere (from Lucas Romaniuk) tallied while the team was short-handed.
