The Sunset Country Ford Mustangs dropped a 2-1 decision to Dryden in the semi-finals here Sunday morning to get knocked out of their own ‘AA’ Atom tournament
Cody Szachury and Marion Gardner scored first-period goals to stake Dryden to a 2-0 lead.
Michael Spencer, assisted by Scott Howarth, tallied with 4:35 left in the second period to pull the home side to within 2-1. But that was as close as they would get as neither team could score in the tight, defensive struggle in the third.
Dryden went on to lose the final 4-2 to Westfort (Thunder Bay) on Sunday afternoon.
The Mustangs advanced to the semi-finals after winning all three of their games during pool play.
After opening with a 2-1 win Friday morning over the North End Flames (Thunder Bay) on goals by Shaun Egan and Jordan Bale, the host Mustangs dumped the Nor-Wester Makkinga Contract (Thunder Bay) 4-1 on Friday night.
David Pierce, Andrew Perrault, Justin Larson, and Cody Dittaro all scored in that one.
Then the Mustangs earned a narrow 2-1 victory over the Red Lake Rockets. Red Lake got on the board first with two minutes left in the first but the Mustangs grabbed the lead for good with a pair of goals by Dittaro and Brian White just 10 seconds apart midway in the second.
Neither team scored in the third.
Nor-Wester ended up winning the ‘B’ crown with a 3-2 win over Kenora while Atikokan claimed the ‘C’ title by doubling North End 4-2.
