The local Sunset Country Ford Mustangs attended the 32-team Fargo Flyers International Squirt Tournament last weekend and lost out in the ‘C’ final.
“It was a great tournament — the kids played okay,” coach Joe Bobczynski noted.
The Mustangs faced off against Lakeville in the ‘C’ final on Sunday and were nipped 2-1.
Andrew Easton had scored their lone goal in the first period. But after a scoreless second, the Panthers netted the equalizer in the third and then the game-winner a few minutes later.
The Mustangs opened the tourney with a tough 5-4 loss to Phoenix, Ariz. in overtime, which dropped them into the ‘C’ side.
They had jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on goals by Dan Chapman (Brian Glavish) and Easton. Then after Phoenix got on the scoreboard, Easton scored again to make it 3-1 after one.
Phoenix scored twice to knot the game at 3-3, then Steve Boileau (Taylor Jorgenson) put the Mustangs back out in front. But Phoenix netted the game-tying goal late in regulation time, then won it with three minutes on the clock in overtime.
But the Mustangs then reeled off three-straight wins to advance to the ‘C’ final, including a narrow 4-3 victory over Devil’s Lake.
Scott Sampson, George Ossachuk (Kevin Bobczynski), and Kyle Herr (Boileau) all scored in the first period, then Easton got the eventual game-winning goal in the second.
The Mustangs then dominated Aravda, scoring five times over the first two periods en route to a 6-2 win.
Easton and Bobczynski each had a pair of goals to lead the attack in that one, with Chapman and Glavish netting singles. Ben Drazenovich (two), Herr, Chapman, Boileau, and Tyler Harris were credited with assists.
In their fourth game, Aaron Kadikoff earned the shutout in goal as the Mustangs blanked Chaska 4-0.
Glavish, Drazenovich, Brent Lindberg, and Easton all scored in that one, with assists going to Harris, Easton, Herr, and Lindberg.
The Mustangs next will travel to Thunder Bay on March 22-25 for the Elk’s tournament, which will be their last one of the year.
Emo Esso also traveled to Fargo and won two games but lost three.
They opened up the tournament with a 3-1 over Alexandria, MN.
William Brandon was the lone goal scorer in that game.
“They played well and after that win they were one of the favourites to win,” said David Lloyd coach for Emo Esso.
They lost 9-zip to Ontario, California who ended up making it to the ‘A’ final.
That loss put them in the second pool where Esso went head-to-head with Boulder, Co and lost 7-1.
Riley Caul scored the lone goal.
They lost 4-1 to Fergus Falls, ND with Brandon netting the lone goal.
Jordan Davis and Brandon dumped in two goals in the 5-2 loss to Bloomington Jefferson, MN.
“By winning the first game it put us in the tough pool but I am really happy with how they played. They gave 100 percent every game,” enthused Lloyd.
He added the kids were great ambassadors for Emo.
