Mustangs, KCs start tourney with win

The local Sunset Country Ford Atom ‘AA’ Mustangs opened action at the Robin’s Donuts Invitational in Thunder Bay last night with a 2-1 win over the Norwest Stars.
Jordan Davis and Kyle Herr scored for the Mustangs while Ryan Faragher earned up the win in goal.
The Mustangs played their second of four round-robin games in their pool this afternoon against the Longlac Wolves (the outcome wasn’t known by press time).
Meanwhile, the KC PeeWees dumped the KC Sabres 5-1 in their first game this morning, getting goals from Andrew Easton, Mitchell Green, Kevin Plett, Tyler Miller, and Danny Chapman.
Both local ‘AA’ teams have played strongly at tournaments so far this season. The Mustangs have won their first two appearances while the PeeWees have taken top honours in two of three.
In related news, two local ‘A’ teams also are competing at the tournament. In Novice minor action, the Times Tigers upended the Current River Comets (Thunder Bay) 1-0. Andrew Gobeil netted the lone goal while Mike Mainville earned the shutout.
But the IBEW Lightning were blanked 7-0 in their first game in the PeeWee division.
The Robin’s tournament is one of the biggest in the region, welcoming more than 100 Novice, Atom, and PeeWee teams. The finals for all six divisions (‘A’ and ‘AA’ in each age category) are set for Sunday.
Still with minor hockey, the local Bantam house league is hosting an 11-team tournament which started this morning. Three Fort Frances squads (Canadian Tire, Holmlunds, and Oddfellows) are competing against teams from Emo, Kenora, Dryden, and Atikokan.
The ‘B’ final goes Sunday at 1 p.m., followed by the ‘A’ final at 2:30.
Organizers also are holding draws for a number of prizes donated by local businesses. Tickets will be on sale until tomorrow, with the draws made later in the afternoon.
