Mustangs fourth at Fargo

The local Sunset Country Ford Mustangs ‘AA’ Atoms finished fourth at a 32-team hockey tournament in Fargo, N.D. last weekend, losing 5-1 to West Valley, Cal. in the third-place game.
Josh Sigurdson had put the Mustangs up 1-0 in the first period but West Valley stormed back with five unanswered goals to win.
The Mustangs were relegated to the third-place game after being bounced 7-4 by Bloomington Jefferson, Mn. in the ‘A’ semi-finals.
After falling behind 1-0, Scott Sampson, assisted by Steven Boileau and Tyler Kadikoff, tied things up with 8:36 left in the first period. Then after Bloomington scored twice more, Tyler Miller tallied on a penalty shot to cut the lead to 3-2.
Bloomington went up 5-2 with a pair of quick goals in the second frame before Brian White (assisted by Sampson) closed the gap with 2:06 left in the period.
The Mustangs then gave up two more quick ones in the third before Boileau closed out the scoring–unassisted–late in the game.
Miller was named game MVP for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs advanced to the playoffs after finishing with a 3-0 record in pool play, including a 3-1 victory over Chaska, Mn. in their opener.
White, named game MVP for the Mustangs, led the way with a goal and two assists. Miller and Sampson also netted singles.
The Mustangs also got strong forechecking from Mitchell Green, Brandon Roden, and George Ossachuk against Chaska.
In their next game, Paul Dobransky’s goal with 4:59 to go gave the Mustangs a narrow 2-1 win over a team from Dallas.
Miller opened the scoring late in the second period but Dallas tied things up in the third–and could have taken the lead on a penalty shot. But Mustang goalie Justin Pryde–named the team’s game MVP–made the big save.
The Muskies then needed double overtime to top Moorhead, Mn. 3-2. White, assisted by Miller, scored the game-winner early in the second overtime.
Dobransky had opened the scoring in the first before Moorhead tied it at 1-1 less than two minutes later. Miller then made it 2-1 with just 42 seconds left in the period.
That score held up until Moorhead tied the game with just 1:44 left in regulation time.
Wade Friesen was named game MVP but the Mustangs also were bolstered by the strong defensive play of Cody Vold and Matthew Gurski.
