The Sunset Country Ford Mustangs came home with second-place honours from a “AA” Atom hockey tournament in Kenora last weekend, losing to Morden in overtime in the final.
Morden opened up a 2-0 lead with a pair of first-period goals but Brian Glavish (assisted by George Ossachuk) tallied in the second to cut the gap to one.
Morden netted four goals of their own in the second but the Mustangs staged a late flurry with two minutes left in the period on goals by Dan Chapman (from Herr), Andrew Easton (unassisted), and Kevin Bobcznski (Herr) to make it 6-4.
Then it was all Fort Frances in the third as Easton scored twice to tie the game at 6-6 and send it to overtime. But it was Morden who triumphed 7-6 in the extra frame.
The Mustangs opened play with a 6-0 whitewash over Sioux Lookout on two-goal performances by Chapman, Easton, and Brent Lindberg. Justin Scott (two) and Tyler Harris picked up assists.
Then they had a tough time against Morden in their second game, falling 5-1. Easton (Scott) netted their lone goal. And against Portage, the Mustangs had to settle for a 3-3 tie.
Lindberg and Chapman each had a goal and an assist in that one, with Herr tallying the Fort’s other goal. Scott also assisted on Herr’s goal.
The Mustangs then wrapped up round-robin play with a 10-0 drubbing over Dryden. Chapman led the attack with four goals while Easton, Harris, Glavish, Herr, Bobczynski, and Benji Drazenovich all netted singles.
Lindberg also had two assists in that one, with Scott, Drazenovich, Glavish, Scott Sampson, and Taylor Jorgenson also being credited with assists.
