The local Sunset Country Ford Mustangs “AA” Atom hockey team were blanked 4-0 in their final round-robin game by the Volunteer Pool Bearcats (Thunder Bay) at the 28th-annual Elks tournament there.
The loss ousted the Mustangs from further contention.
The Bearcats grabbed a 3-0 lead after the first period, then took advantage of seven Mustang minor penalties over the final two frames to preserve the shutout.
It was the second-straight game the Mustangs–fresh off a 4-1 loss to the Elks 82s–struggled offensively.
The Elks had jumped out to a 3-0 lead in that one before Tyler Miller, assisted by Tyson Kadikoff, got the Mustangs on the scoreboard with 9:30 to play.
The Mustangs opened the tournament with a 6-2 win over the St. Cloud River Rattlers. Kadikoff led the way with two goals while Miller, Brandon Roden, Brian White, and Josh Sigurdson added singles.
Then they pulled out a 5-1 win over the Norwest Stars on goals by White (two), Miller (two), and Steven Boileau.
