Mustangs bring home ‘B’ title

It doesn’t pay to horse around—or mess with Mustangs.
Bryce Knapp had the game-winner as the local Sunset Country Atom ‘AA’ Mustangs recovered from two-straight losses to beat the Dryden Rangers 3-1 in the ‘B’ final of a tournament Nov. 21-23 in Dryden.
Devin Stromness delivered some clutch play between the pipes for the victors, while Ryan Windego and Brad McDonald added the other Fort Frances goals against a Rangers squad that had beaten the Mustangs 7-4 in the preliminary round.
In that game, Mustang goals came from Ryan Mosbeck, Knapp, Chris Bobczynski, and Jeff Davis.
The loss to the Rangers was the first down note on what had been a fantastic start for the Mustangs in Dryden.
Fort Frances topped the North End Flames (Thunder Bay) 4-1 in their opening game, with Donovan Cousineau leading the way with a pair of goals. Bobczynski and Tyler Fontana added the others.
Cody Vangel then netted the game-winner in a 2-1 thriller against the Elks 82s in the Mustangs’ next outing, with Davis pitching in with the other goal.
But after the Rangers inflicted their damage, the Mustangs then were slammed 11-2 by the KC Sabres (Thunder Bay) in the semi-finals—setting the stage for their rematch with Dryden.
Davis and Bobczynski were the only Mustangs to hit the twine against the Sabres.
Sunset Country head coach Don Larson and his troops now will turn their focus west as they take part in a tournament in Baudette, Mn. this weekend.
