Muskies win opener

David Pierce had the hat trick as the 17th-ranked Muskie boys’ hockey team opened the all-Ontario championship with a 6-3 upset over the eighth-ranked St. Thomas More Knights (Hamilton) this morning.
Brian White got the Muskies on the board first with a power-play goal 9:59 into the game, assisted by Lucas Romaniuk and Alex McQuarrie.
Pierce made it 2-0 when he caused a turnover at the Knights’ blueline and scored on a breakaway while the Muskies were short-handed.
Pierce then netted his second goal later in the first, assisted by Tyson Romyn, before the Knights were able to beat Muskie goalie Jason Green to make it 3-1 at the intermission.
Pierce got his hat trick just 20 seconds into the second period, assisted by Brett Meyers and Jordan Bale, but the Knights stormed back—tallying a pair of power-play goals to make it 4-3 after two.
But the Muskies sealed the win with a pair of unanswered goals in the third by Brock Benjamin (Brett Perreault) and Josh Sigurdson (an empty-netter assisted by Benjamin and Bale).
The black-and-gold next will face the 16th-ranked Chatham-Kent Golden Hawks tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. (CST) before facing the top-ranked St. Mary Monarchs (Pickering) at 1 p.m. (CST).
The Muskies then will close out pool play Friday morning versus the ninth-ranked Orangeville Bears.
The top two teams in each pool will advance to the quarter-finals later Friday.
