Muskies win but fall short of playoffs

The Muskie boys’ soccer team scored their first goals—and earned their first win—at the all-Ontarios in Sturgeon Falls this morning but were on the outside looking in for a playoff berth.
The black-and-gold edged host E.S. Franco Cite (Sturgeon Falls) 2-0 this morning to finish pool play with a 1-1-1 record—at best a third-place finish in their four-team pool.
Only the top two teams from each of the four pools moved on to the quarter-finals, which started this afternoon.
The Muskies, the NWOSSAA silver medalists and 14th-ranked team among the field of 16 at OFSAA, needed to beat Franco by seven goals and have Glengarry (Ottawa) tie Bellriver (Windsor) this morning to have a mathematical chance at making the quarter-finals.
The team opened play yesterday with a 0-0 tie against Glengarry but then were blanked 3-0 by Bellriver.
Meanwhile, NWOSSAA champion St. Ignatius, the top-ranked team there, finished pool play at 2-0-1 after a 0-0 tie with Collingwood this morning.
They were to play Grey Highlands (North Toronto) in the quarter-finals later today.
The Falcons had blanked Brock 6-0 and edged E.S. Northern 4-1 in pool play yesterday.
