Muskies unbeaten in opening tourney

Both Muskie soccer teams enjoyed a strong start at the first NorWOSSA tournament of the season here over the weekend.
Each squad only allowed one goal in their four games in this qualifying event, which featured all seven league teams. The girls went 4-0 while the boys went 3-0-1.
“[The weekend] gave us a good chance to look at what’s out there,” said Muskie girls’ head coach Struchan Gilson. “Because of the weather, a lot of the teams haven’t had a lot of time outside.”
The girls—the defending NorWOSSA champs—opened action Friday morning with a 5-0 romp over the Rainy River Owls. Hillary Morgan, Tara Lloyd, Christin Thomson, Miranda Miller, and Rebecca Cornell scored in that one.
Thomson then scored three goals and Miller added two to lead the team to a 7-0 win over Red Lake. Trista Barker and Andrea Boileau added singles.
They rounded out play with a 4-1 over Beaver Brae (Kenora) and 5-0 win over Dryden on Saturday.
Thomson struck with two while Barker and Carling Barton each scored against Kenora. Barker, Thomson, Ashley Wilson, Jessica Wilson, and Noreen Hartlin scored in their win over Dryden.
After blowing out the Owls 7-0 in Friday’s opener, the Muskie boys beat Red Lake 4-1, battled Kenora to a scoreless draw, and edged Dryden (the defending NorWOSSA champs) 1-0.
Jeremy Wilson scored twice in the win over Rainy River. Tanner Kaemingh, Kyle McTavish, Matt Basaraba, Chris Plett, and Tyler Barker also tallied.
Muskie scorers for the other three games were unavailable.
Both teams will head to Winnipeg this weekend for exhibition tournaments before their second NorWOSSA tournament in Dryden on May 10-11.
The league’s final tournament will be held the week after in Kenora, with the winners advancing to NWOSSAA.
