Muskies ‘tracking’ for gold

Staff

Run faster, jump higher, fly farther than the rest and a trip to the ultimate athletics battlefield awaits.
The mission is clear for the Muskie track-and-field team, which is competing at the NWOSSAA championships in Thunder Bay yesterday and today.
All gold medalists from NWOSSAA and the two other northern regions will earn a berth at OFSAA from June 1-3 in Belleville, along with the non-winner with the best time or distance in their specific event from among the three regions.
The black-and-gold’s last two meets leading up to NWOSSAA were productive ones.
On May 9, as part of a tough 11-school field at the Virginia Blue Devil Invitation in Virginia, Mn., the Muskies came away with six medals.
Sean Huziak had a silver in the boys’ shot put with a top toss of 39’8″ behind winner Jasiah Wigdahl of the Ely Timberwolves (41′).
Ellie Petsnick also won silver in the girls’ high jump. Her best height 5’2″ was even with winner Kiara Moelenbrock of the Mesabi East Giants (Aurora, Mn.), who won on a countback.
Also grabbing runner-up honours was Aaron Scheibler, who measured 18’5″ in the boys’ long jump to trail only Josh Heiman of Ely (19’9″).
Taking bronze were Greta Fedoruk in the girls’ 800m (2:49.89), Grace Petsnick in girls’ high jump (4’10”), and Sekina Scheibler in boys’ discus (112’11”).
Muskie coach John Dutton listed the girls’ 4x800m relay team as also having finished third, although the official results had Fort High in fourth place (11:56.53).
The contingent also attended the Harry McMaster Classic in Dryden on May 15.
But due to technical difficulties involving the format of the results, complete official results were unavailable at press time.
