Muskies thumped by Falls Broncos

The Muskies are still looking to beat the International Falls Broncos on the gridiron after losing 49-6 in exhibition action over there Friday night.
“They are a very good football team,” Muskie head coach Bob Swing noted yesterday. “They were state quarter-finalists last year so we knew they were going to be good.
“I expected the talent but the athleticism was something I didn’t expect,” he added. “We knew it would be tough because we had some young players in some key positions and the other team took advantage of that.
“ “That is the worse loss I have taken since I have been coaching,” noted Swing. “They are like piranhas . . . they smelled blood and went after it.”
Trailing 31-0 late in the second quarter, the Muskies got their lone touchdown when Muskie wide receiver Adam McTavish hauled in a Gary Wager pass and ran 47 yards to the end zone.
The Muskies failed on their two-point conversion attempt.
The Broncos iced the game in the third quarter when Mike Jensen scored a touchdown and Chris Hughes booted a 39-yard field goal–setting a new Bronco record.
It broke the old mark–set in 1977 by Kurt Knapp–by one yard.
Hughes also tied the Bronco record for most field goals made in one game (two).
The Broncos had jumped to a 14-0 lead after the first quarter on touchdowns by Chad Kuffenkam and Jensen. They made it 31-zip on touchdowns by Kuffenkam and Dowty, as well as a Hughes field goal.
After McTavish’s catch, Kuffenkam rounded out the first-half scoring with a five-yard run. The two-point conversion was good to make it 39-6 at halftime.
There was no scoring in the fourth quarter.
“For an opening game, it seemed to be fairly error-free,” long-time Bronco head coach Stuart Nordquist noted Tuesday.
“We can definitely work out some stuff on the team,” noted Swing. “Like the basic fundamentals, line up, and who each of the players are reading.”
Swing also noted their shortcomings stand out when the Muskies play American teams. “When you play an American team, you can’t hide your weakness,” he stressed.
Still, Swing said there was no doubt the Muskies are as good as the Broncos, adding the coaching staff wouldn’t have scheduled a game against a team they didn’t think they could compete against.
The Broncos dominated all the stats, racking up 491 total yards, including 312 on 45 rushes. The Muskies finished with 196, including 52 gained on 33 rushes.
The Falls defence also had one interception.
