It was a perfect kick-off to the season for the Muskie soccer squads Thursday afternoon as both the boys’ and girls’ teams defeated the Rainy River Owls in a pair of exhibition games at Fort High.
The boys dominated right from the opening whistle en route to a 5-0 win, with Justin Anderson, David Chambers, Colton Spicer, Anniss Seid, and Brandon McGinnis all finding the back of the net.
“I thought it was a great way to get things started,” head coach Shane Beckett enthused.
“Systems-wise, I thought we did all right, even though we haven’t had much of a chance to work on them due to the weather,” he noted.
“And the younger kids filled in really nicely and did what we thought they would do in a game situation.”
The girls, meanwhile, earned a 4-1 triumph over the Owls thanks to goals by Maryam Seid, Sara Roach, and Courtney Roach.
Fort High’s other goal came after an Owls’ player put the ball into her own net.
“I think the girls were a little bit nervous before the game began since it was their first game of the year,” noted head coach Sarah Noonan.
“We started off a little bit rough,” she admitted. “Our first touch wasn’t really settling for us and our passes weren’t going where they were supposed to go,
“But once the second half got underway, I thought we settled into our game a lot more,” Noonan added.
The Muskie girls will open NorWOSSA play here next Wednesday (May 4) against a yet-to-be determined opponent.
The boys, meanwhile, will be hitting the road this weekend for the annual St. John’s-Ravencourt tournament in Winnipeg.
They also will begin NorWOSSA play on May 4.
