Muskies sweep Kenora

Both the Muskie senior and junior boys’ basketball squads improved to 3-0 in NorWOSSA play after home-court wins over the Kenora Broncos yesterday.
The seniors carried the play most of the way en route to an easy 76-47 win.
“We wanted to push the offence a bit more [yesterday] and it paid off,” assistant coach Sarah Noonan said. “We just came out more aggressive on the offence, and defensively, we full-court man pressured them for part of the game and then we got into a little bit of foul trouble with the guys.
“But our half-court zone was really impressive there, as well,” she added.
Travis Stromness had 16 points to lead the Muskies while Garnet Cornell added 14.
“The guards are making smart plays drawing the man, and then with the little dish to the big guys down low, it’s turning into an easy two points,” Noonan remarked.
The juniors, meanwhile, kept building up a bigger lead quarter-by-quarter while coasting to a 50-38 win. They led 15-11 after one quarter and 24-16 at the half.
Dustin Eyolfson led the way with 16 points.
The game featured some
spirited intensity between two teams all too familiar with one another, and that led to some hard fouls and physical play in the paint.
“It was getting scrappy,” noted Muskie coach Greg Ste. Croix. “They [the Broncos] definitely played with a lot more intensity than they did up in Kenora last time.
“They had a short bench and worked really hard, and I have to tip my hat to them,” Ste. Croix added.
Spikers sweep
It also was a clean sweep for the Muskie senior and junior girls’ volleyball squads against Kenora here yesterday.
The seniors took the best-of-five match in three-straight sets by scores of 25-13, 25-21, and 26-24 to improve to 2-1 on the season.
“The first two sets were really well done, and then the last set they got ahead of us,” senior Kayla Windigo noted.
“We weren’t talking as much as we should of been, but started picking it up at the end and it was a good game overall,” she added.
The juniors (2-1) also swept their best-of-five match, taking Kenora by scores of 25-20, 25-23, and 25-13.
Due to the Christmas break, the court teams don’t resume NorWOSSA action until Jan. 8 in Dryden.
