It was a perfect start to the year for the Muskie court sports teams in Kenora on Tuesday afternoon.
All four squads came away with wins over the host Broncos in their NorWOSSA regular-season openers.
The junior boys’ basketball team dumped the Broncos by a 49-27 count.
Emerson Evans led the way with a 14-point performance while Brennan Jourdain chipped in with 12 points.
Tayler Chown added eight points while Garrett Paull and Christian Armstrong had four apiece.
Jake McKinnon sank a three-pointer while Sullivan Spiers and Ethan Barker both potted a basket.
The seniors thumped Kenora 54-34 on the back of Mike Vanderaa’s 20-point performance, which included five “treys”.
Sean Huziak chipped in with nine points while Caleb Allan potted six.
Garrett Hyatt and Wyatt Richards both tallied five points while Ayden Gushulak-Kelly sank a three-pointer and Santino Smith notched three points.
William Richards sank a basket while Dominic States tallied a single off a free throw to round out the offence for the Muskies.
In girls’ volleyball action, meanwhile, the seniors swept the Broncos 2-0.
The set scores were 25-14 and 25-23. Fort High also won the third exhibition set by a 25-15 margin.
The juniors were able to pull out a 2-1 win over Kenora. The set scores were 25-11, 14-25, and 25-12.
Both Muskie basketball teams next will be in action this weekend at the annual Brandon Sun Spartan Invitational tournament.
All four squads then will resume NorWOSSA action next Tuesday (Dec. 17) when they head to Sioux Lookout to take on the Warriors.
