Muskies sweep Broncos

It was a clean sweep for the four Muskie court teams in NorWOSSA action here yesterday against the Kenora Broncos.
Caleb McIntosh lit up the visitors for a game-high 31 points to pace the senior boys’ basketball team (3-1) to a 67-31 romp.
Kevin Metke added 11 while Kirk Johnson and Paul Smart netted six each.
Russel Guinto and Wallace Henry had eight points apiece to lead the Broncos (0-3).
In junior boys’ hoops action, Fort High (4-0) roared out to a 19-6 lead after one quarter, but then had to hang on in the second half for a 43-39 victory over Kenora (1-2).
Chase McGuire netted eight points to spearhead a balanced Muskie attack, with Jacob Empey, Matt Swing, and Liam Metke each adding six.
Dylan Andrews had a game-high 15 points for the Broncos.
Both Muskie basketball teams head to Thunder Bay this weekend for the Falcon Invitational tournament, hosted by St. Ignatius and being played at three separate schools.
On the volleyball court, meanwhile, the senior Muskies (2-2) made short work of Kenora (0-3) in sweeping their best-of-five match 25-10, 25-5, and 25-16.
“We learned a lot from playing the Broncos last time,” noted co-coach Jason Cain.
“They tipped the ball a lot in the middle and on the edges before, so we changed our defence to pick those up,” he explained.
“The key for us was serving well,” Cain added.
“We had girls get seven, 10, even 15 points in a row today from the service line.”
And the junior Muskies (3-1) rallied from a 2-1 deficit to beat the Broncos and complete the sweep.
Fort High took the first set 25-20 but dropped the next two by scores of 25-23 and 25-20.
The black-and-gold stormed back, however, winning the fourth set 25-13 before taking the fifth-and-deciding one 15-11.
“It was a slower game at the start, considering we only practiced once since Dec. 18,” noted Muskie co-coach Alyssa Holliday.
“Overall, we did really well.
“But we’ve got a stretch coming up where we’ve got lots of games in a short amount of time,” Holliday warned.
“So we need to have some good practices.”
Both Muskie volleyball squads head to Kenora this weekend for tournament action, with the seniors competing at St. Thomas Aquinas and the juniors at Beaver Brae.
