The Muskies will be looking to keep their perfect record intact to start the season when they host the Baudette Bears on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
The black-and-gold improved to 8-0 (6-0 in NorWOSSA play and 2-0 versus American teams) with a 3-2 overtime victory in Chisholm last Friday night.
Kevin Webb continued his goal-scoring tear, netting the game-winner about two minutes into the extra frame after a nice feed by Donald Kellar from behind the net.
The Muskies had opened the scoring when Jesse Rodrigues made it 1-0 just two minutes into the game, which held up until the six-minute mark of the second period when Chisholm finally beat Jamie Booth.
Adam McTavish put the black-and-gold up 2-1 at the 1:30 mark of the third but Chisholm tied the game on a power play goal just a few minutes later.
The Muskies were able to stave off Chisholm in the third to force overtime, killing off four of five penalties, including a two-man disadvantage.
Muskie head coach Glen Edwards said he was pleased with his team’s latest victory, especially coming on the road against an American opponent.
“It was not too bad. We rotated [the forward lines] and played six defencemen,” he noted. “The fourth line played a lot and they played well.
“Yeah, it’s going pretty good–we haven’t lost yet,” he added.
Last season, the Muskies struggled against the much faster tempo of U.S. high school hockey teams. But the 1999-2000 edition appears to play the same type of style to go along with solid goaltending and an improved defence.
Still, despite allowing only 10 goals in eight games, Edwards is concerned with the team’s play in their own zone–something that showed in the latter stages of their 4-2 win over the International Falls Broncos here last week.
“We worked on playing in our zone after the Falls game,” he noted.
