It was a classic case of good news, bad news over in International Falls last night.
The Muskie girls’ hockey team held up their end of the bargain with a 3-2 win over the host Broncos, but the boys couldn’t duplicate the feat—falling 6-0 to their border rivals.
The girls earned their third-straight win over the Broncos, though it took a pair of third-period goals by Jillian Langtry and Kailey Curtis to seal it.
The Broncos had opened the scoring in the first on a goal by Sydney Gordon, but Fort High tied the score before the end of the period on Carlee Bosma’s tally.
The 1-1 score held up until the third when Langtry broke in on a breakaway and slid a backhand underneath goalie Taylar Nelson to give the Muskies their first lead of the game.
Curtis, the Muskie captain, netted what turned out to be a much-needed insurance marker shortly after, converting a rebound after a strong rush from Taylor Meyers.
The Broncos closed the deficit with a goal by Taylor Raboin less than a minute later, but they couldn’t get the equalizer.
The Muskies were whistled for five minor penalties in the third, and a well-timed trip thwarted a breakaway opportunity for the Broncos at the buzzer.
The girls first beat the Broncos 8-1 back on Dec. 5 and then 4-2 on Dec. 19.
The Muskie boys, meanwhile, couldn’t channel the energy of a raucous crowd in their favour, falling behind 2-0 after one period and never being able to mount a comeback.
The Broncos added to that lead with the lone goal of the second, then ran away with in the third—netting three goals to ice the victory and a split of the two-game exhibition series.
International Falls’ goalie Mike Hart made 23 saves for the shutout.
The Muskies had won the opener 4-3 back on Dec. 5.
