The Muskie hockey teams met with mixed results in their exhibition showdowns against International Falls last night at Bronco Arena.
The girls’ squad got the evening off to a positive start with a 4-2 victory over their Bronco counterparts.
The celebration proved to be short-lived, though, as the Muskie boys were unable to duplicate the feat—losing 3-1 to the Broncos’ varsity squad in the nightcap.
The Muskie girls took a 3-0 lead into the third period courtesy of goals by Taylor Meyers, Kailey Curtis, and Kristen Penner.
The Broncos charged back, though, and cut the deficit to a single goal after Taylor Raboin netted a pair in less than a minute.
But the Muskies held on, with Erika Anderson scoring an empty-netter with four seconds left to seal the 4-2 win.
Katie Stearns earned up the win in goal.
In the boys’ game, the Muskies jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Matt McLellan.
But Bronco Jake Youso then took over, scoring a pair of goals before setting up Ladd Corrin for the home team’s final marker en route to the 3-1 victory.
Muskie goalie David Moen was saddled with the loss despite coming up with several big saves, including a breakaway stop on Youso late in the game.
Both Muskie squads resume NorWOSSA action tonight, with the boys hosting the Dryden Eagles at 7:30 p.m. at the Ice for Kids Arena.
The girls, meanwhile, are in Kenora for a 6 p.m. showdown against the third-place Broncos.
