For a second straight year the Muskie senior girls’ volleyball team has booked their ticket to the OFSAA ‘AA’ championship after completing a sweep of the Westgate Tigers in the best-of-three NWOSSAA championship on Friday in Thunder Bay.
The Muskies won both games 2-0 to earn their berth to the all-Ontarios slated for March 9-11 in Kingsville.
Fort High had advanced to NWOSSAA after defeating the Dryden Eagles 2-0 in the NorWOSSA final last Monday at Fort High.
It was a much different story for the Muskie senior boys’ basketball team, however, as the St. Ignatius Falcons (Thunder Bay) took over in the second half of both games to sweep the best-of-three NWOSSAA championship held at Fort High on Friday and Saturday.
St. Ignatius grabbed a 70-48 win in Game 1 on Friday afternoon, then won 85-48 in Game 2 on Saturday morning to advance to the OFSAA ‘AA’ championship March 9-11 in Windsor.
Fort High hung tough for the first quarter in both games, but eventually succumbed to the Falcons’ full-court pressure defence that forced a bevy of turnovers.
Ethan Willmore led St. Ignatius in Game 1 with 19 points.
Sean Huziak notched 15 for the Muskies, who had defeated the Sioux Lookout Warriors 61-54 for their second straight NorWOSSA title last Monday at Fort High.
Mike Vanderaa also had a solid game in potting 13 points.
In Game 2, Willmore also led his squad in scoring as he nailed three three-pointers as part of a 27-point performance to lead the Falcons to victory.
Huziak had 12 points for the Muskies while William Richards added seven.
