Muskies rebound in Winnipeg

While the Muskie girls’ soccer team snowed the competition in Winnipeg, the boys were simply snowed out.
The ‘B’ final of the St. John’s Ravenscourt Invitational, which was to feature the Muskie boys against River East, was cancelled yesterday after the city awoke to blizzard-like conditions.
“Just before our game, the fields were covered in snow,” said Muskie co-coach Ben Andrusco. “We felt it would be too dangerous to start playing.”
Andrusco added the team got home safely yesterday, escaping the brunt of the storm.
The ‘A’ final between Vincent Massey and St. Paul’s also was not played, but will be rescheduled this week.
After losing their opener 3-1 to Vincent Massey on Thursday, the black-and-gold had reeled off two-straight wins against Louis Riel (2-1) and Tech Voc (3-0) in the ‘B’ semi-finals.
Against Louis Riel, Jamie Algie tied the game at 1-1 before halftime. Then Bryce Witherspoon pounced on a loose ball and netted the game-winner off a corner shot.
Witherspoon, Nathan Miller, and Barry Selin tallied for the Muskies against Tech Voc, who only had nine of 11 players on the field.
Miller scored the Muskies’ only goal in their loss to Vincent Massey.
Meanwhile, the Muskie girls also rebounded after an early loss en route to a first-place finish at the Kelvin Invitational tournament.
They lost 2-1 (penalty kicks) to the Kenora Broncos, upended Churchill 1-0 (also in penalty kicks), dumped St. John’s 3-0, and then blanked Kelvin (1-0) and Churchill (1-0)—the latter in the ‘A’ final.
Scoring regulation goals for the Muskies were Danielle McGee, Shannon Koval, Miranda Miller, Sarah Barton, Nicole Rogozinski, and Carling Barton.
“Coming in, we wanted to play good competition. We did and did so very well,” head coach Struchan Gilson said.
Next up for both soccer teams is the second NorWOSSA tournament in Dryden.
Each team will play four games starting Friday, with total records (including results from the opening tournament here back in April) going towards seeding for the NorWOSSA finals in Kenora on May 17-18.
