The Kenora Broncos’ skills as gracious hosts need some work, but there’s not much wrong with their athletic efforts.
The Muskie court teams certainly weren’t given a very warm welcome yesterday in Kenora, losing three of their four NorWOSSA clashes to the Broncos.
The junior boys’ volleyball squad (2-2) salvaged the day by sweeping the host Broncos (the individual game scores were unavailable at press time today).
The Muskie senior spikers put forth a far superior effort compared to their straight-set loss versus the Dryden Eagles here Tuesday afternoon.
But despite another strong game from veteran Curtis Wepruk, the black-and-gold (1-3) couldn’t overcome their manpower disadvantage, losing 3-1 to the Broncos (again, the individual game scores were unavailable).
The Muskies brought only seven players for the match due to injuries and other absences.
Meanwhile, the Muskie senior girls’ basketball team suffered their first loss of the season in heart-breaking fashion, dropping a 50-48 decision in overtime to the Broncos.
Leading for most of the contest, the Muskies watched the Broncos capitalize on some late foul-shooting chances to pull even before squeaking out the victory in the extra session.
Tricia Smith led the Muskies with 16 points while Allison Hyatt and Danielle McGee added eight points each.
Hyatt played the whole game despite nursing a sore back. She was diagnosed with a muscle virus after the game, making her status for next week’s action questionable.
Finally, the junior hoopsters (0-4) continued to have their troubles, falling 28-20 to Kenora. Erica Strom paced the Muskies with four points.
All four teams resume NorWOSSA action next Thursday (Oct. 10) here against Dryden.
