Both Muskie girls’ basketball teams will face three teams in Thunder Bay this weekend for their first tournament action of the season.
The squads are slated to play against St. Thomas Aquinas (Kenora), as well as St. Ignatius and another team from Thunder Bay.
“We are taking the entire junior team–all 22–because we don’t know if we will have any more tournaments this season,” noted coach Mike Busch.
Paul Noonan, head coach for the senior team, said he doesn’t know what to expect from their Thunder Bay opponents.
“It is hard to say. I have no idea what St. Ignatius looks like,” Noonan remarked. “[But] the girls are looking forward to it.”
Meanwhile, Busch said his team played an inter-squad game featuring refs and the clock last Thursday.
“The veterans really came through and the rookies learned what they needed to do to get into the game,” he noted.
Busch also said the team will be working on its offence and defence in practice this week.
“We will expand on what they already know,” he stressed.
Still, he’s confident his players will do the best they can. “They will be as good as any other team there,” he enthused.
“In practice this week, we will be mostly working on improving the inside game with Siobhan Devlin, Kelly Crawford, and Linda Zimmerman,” echoed Noonan.
“We want to be more effective on the inside,” he said, adding the Muskies should be able to capitalize on that against St. Thomas Aquinas given their size advantage.
Busch also said they’re trying to organize a tournament here but that it’s still tentative.
And Noonan added he’s confident there will be some more games here, probably against St. Thomas Aquinas.
